How It Came To Be: Office Humor Blog

Office Humor Blog, (oddly enough, a blog about of office humor) was the first blog I created and this is the story of how it came to be.

With my Squirrelinabox Poker site being the first site I created for my network (before there was even the idea of a network), I started looking at ways of increasing its traffic and search engine exposure. I taught myself the ins and outs of SEO (search engine optimization) by scowering the web for any and all tutorials and information that I could find. I learned more about link exchanges, keyword density, and all the other technical stuff I expected to find. What I didn’t expect was that some sites were talking about how creating a blog can be a great way to drive traffic. With that, I created my first blog, the Office Humor Blog.

The reason I chose office humor as the subject of the blog is actually kind of a blur. The blog actually was going to be just a test blog, so I didn’t really put much thought into what it would be about. At my previous job, my coworkers and I would always joke around and prank each other. As such, I thought a blog focusing on office jokes and pranks would be a great idea, especially if I could pull off posting a joke a day for constant content.

The blog wasn’t nearly what it is today though. In fact, it was located at a completely different URL http://officehumor.blogspot.com and it was hosted on a completely different platform Blogspot. Blogspot is a free blog hosting site that has built-in blog software that allows you to quickly and easily create a blog. The problem with that is that you get the .blogspot.com at the end of your URL as well as being limited to a very restrictive blogging platform (very difficult to change the look and feel of the blog and impossible to do anything more advanced). I left that blog on Blogspot for around 2 to 3 months when I came across a potentially life changing blog; Problogger.

Darren Rowse, the blogger over at Problogger had an entire blog devoted to teaching people how to be successful with their blogs. It wasn’t one of those shady sites where all the person wants is for you to buy something for Darren wasn’t selling anything. His story is actually just as important as his teachings, as he worked his way from making nothing online to making 6 figures each year. After reading through his more informative posts I realized my blog could be much more than just a filter to my poker site. I also learned that Blogspot was not the way to go for serious blogging. As such, I decided to buy my own domain and install the free Wordpress blogging software on the webhost I was using for my poker site.

Moving to my own domain and to using Wordpress was the best thing I could have done. With Wordpress I’m able to have full control of my blog, with more features and a custom design I created from scratch. I’ve added more sections to the blog over the last few months, adding poems, diversions, and fun office terminology as well as features like polls and related posts with more on the way.

So that’s the story of how the Office Humor Blog came to be. Where’s it headed? Well there’s definitely more additions planned for the site, as I expect it to constantly be evolving and improving. I’ll keep those plans under wraps for now, but as the popularity of the site grows, expect more and more time and effort to be poured into it.
