Television Show Dropped… Fansite’s Future?
Well, it’s official. Spike TV has decided not to bring back Blade: The Series for a second season. Shows I like are created and cancelled all the time, but since I have a fansite for this particular show, this news stings that much more.
To make matters worse, my Blade: The Series fansite is, by far, the most visited of my sites. It’s averaging around 400 visitors a day right now (this is after the season has ended), and had a peak of over 2500 unique visitors the day after the finale. The growth and popularity of the site has been phenomenal. With the show being cancelled, the future of the site is shaky. I do plan on keeping the site updated as long as people keep visiting, but unless the show gets picked up by another network, I don’t see the site lasting long without the actual series continuing.
To make matters even worse, I have a few television related projects in the pipeline that could potentially be affected. I was hoping to leverage my Blade fansite to push some traffic to these new projects, but that traffic will likely not be there when I want it. This means I may do some shuffling of projects so that I either put those TV projects on the backburner, or perhaps try and rush them to completion so as to be able to still capitalize on the lingering popularity of the fansite… I just don’t know.
I will say that I definitely loved working with the fansite. Even though it may only last for the one season, it was still worth it. I definitely would like to do fansites in the future, but as of now, none are planned.
Still Alive and Kicking
I know I haven’t posted an update here in awhile, but just in case you were wondering, I am still alive and kicking. I’ve been busy creating the new site for the store which is still not complete. I’ve gone through half a dozen designs and I’m still not happy with any of them (though I do think I’m getting close).
I’ve also had a bunch of crazy things happening offline, from my new job to some personal things, so I haven’t been able to concentrate on my online projects as much as I would have liked. I am starting to “buckle down” and work more on the store and a few other projects so hopefully I’ll have something to show in a few weeks.
I am planning on changing this site around a bit as well. Right now all posts are categorized by what site they belong to and while this works for network specific posts, it doesn’t really allow for more general or personal posts. I don’t plan on posting about personal life much, but I will be making a few non network related categories that will contain miscellaneous posts that’ll likely include news, tips, and maybe even tutorials for various web related things. For example, in the future I’d like to start posting some tips on search engine optimization, design, and coding. I may decide to make that a completely different site, but since they do seem related to this site, I may just wrap it all into here… we’ll see.
Anyway, like I said, I hope to have some things to reveal in the next few weeks.
