Television Show Dropped… Fansite’s Future?

Well, it’s official. Spike TV has decided not to bring back Blade: The Series for a second season. Shows I like are created and cancelled all the time, but since I have a fansite for this particular show, this news stings that much more.

To make matters worse, my Blade: The Series fansite is, by far, the most visited of my sites. It’s averaging around 400 visitors a day right now (this is after the season has ended), and had a peak of over 2500 unique visitors the day after the finale. The growth and popularity of the site has been phenomenal. With the show being cancelled, the future of the site is shaky. I do plan on keeping the site updated as long as people keep visiting, but unless the show gets picked up by another network, I don’t see the site lasting long without the actual series continuing.

To make matters even worse, I have a few television related projects in the pipeline that could potentially be affected. I was hoping to leverage my Blade fansite to push some traffic to these new projects, but that traffic will likely not be there when I want it. This means I may do some shuffling of projects so that I either put those TV projects on the backburner, or perhaps try and rush them to completion so as to be able to still capitalize on the lingering popularity of the fansite… I just don’t know.

I will say that I definitely loved working with the fansite. Even though it may only last for the one season, it was still worth it. I definitely would like to do fansites in the future, but as of now, none are planned.

The Ebb And Flow Of TV Blogging

One of the most interesting things I’ve noticed about blogging for a television series is how much of a pattern the visitor counts follow. With Blade: The Series airing on Wednesday nights, Thursdays prove to be the day I get over double my average number of visitors. Similarly, Wednesdays and Fridays seem to carry a residual amount, making those two days consistently above average as well.

It doesn’t even really matter what I post about on those days, they always seem to be the most frequently visited. As such, I’ve made sure to post my popular episode recaps early on Thursdays when I was previously waiting until Friday or Saturday to post them. I’ve been trying to publish good posts on the slower days, but they still don’t seem to attract near the attention as the previously mentioned days.

I think a strong reason for this is because much of my traffic is from search engines, and as such, most people do their Blade searches near the air date of the new episode. This obviously isn’t a surprise, but it’s still amazing just how much of a boost it is.

I will say that I’ve learned a lot from my short time covering a television show. It’s not at all like my other projects and it’s definitely a challenge staying on top of everything. I will also say that so far it’s a blast as the community behind the show has been very engaging and supportive.

The site will cover news, interviews, and other important information as well as bringing some personal touches such as a humor section as well as a “wrap up” after each episode.
